Polyphenols and Fatty Liver: The Natural Guardian of Liver Health

Fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has become a growing global health concern. It is characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, which may progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and even liver cancer. Understanding the causes of fatty liver and its prevention is crucial for public health.

Causes of Fatty Liver

The formation of fatty liver is mainly related to the following factors:

  1. Metabolic Disorders: Insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome are major contributors to fatty liver. These conditions lead to increased hepatic fat synthesis and reduced fatty acid oxidation.
  2. Dietary Habits: High-fat and high-sugar diets promote fat accumulation in the liver, especially when combined with lack of physical activity.
  3. Genetic Factors: Certain genetic variations may increase an individual's susceptibility to fatty liver disease.

How Polyphenols Help Prevent and Reduce Liver Fat Accumulation

Polyphenols are natural compounds widely found in plants with various biological activities. Research shows that polyphenols can effectively prevent and reduce fat accumulation in the liver through the following main mechanisms:

  1. Inhibiting Hepatic Fat Synthesis Pathways: Polyphenol compounds, such as quercetin (a flavonoid polyphenol), can suppress the expression of genes related to fat production, such as SREBP-1c (Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein-1c), thereby reducing fat synthesis in the liver¹.
  2. Promoting Fatty Acid Oxidation: Quercetin can activate signaling pathways such as AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase)², promoting fatty acid oxidation and energy expenditure, further reducing fat accumulation in the liver.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Molecular Medicine, high concentrations of catechins (a type of polyphenol) were found to improve liver function and fat metabolism in patients with NAFLD.
